Microsoft unveils tabletop ‘Milan’ computer

Microsoft Corp. has chosen what it sees as the next generation in PC designs — a computer the size and shape of a coffee table with a flat, touch-screen display — as the third major product it has designed and is branding for the consumer electronics market. The company today revealed its 5-year-old “Milan” project, a computer that uses wireless autosync and touch-screen technology to allow users and devices to interact with files and applications using a tabletop screen. The company designed and is branding the computer, as it did with consumer electronics products such as the Xbox game console and the Zune MP3 player. To accompany Milan, Microsoft renamed a team within its Entertainment and Devices Division called New Consumer Products as “Surface Computing.” General Manager Pete Thompson leads the group, which has worked quietly in new projects to give computers and other devices more human interfaces.

  1. I knew tat…. lol when i was 2… i though about it too. BUT the technology of it… it can tells many level, many times apple or any other brand use “… with just a single touch/click” but not litterally. this really means it… n the glass with the video… i mean no one done tat before. n beside this table is in 2007 while apple or any other brand ever come up with something like this. n microsoft is on to the motion detective camera… it’s like wii but alot more actions with no remote

  2. It looks great doesn’t it ??!!

But I tell you what, if you had one of these things you’d have a lot of fun BUT you would exhaust ALL the possibilities within about 2 hours !

Honestly, after 2 hours, you’d think “well, I’ve spun photo’s round, I’ve compared some consumer items…..erm…what next ?”

It’s only really suitable for shops where you go in and buy stuff out of a catalogue. Stuff like that. I really can’t think of any home uses for this.

  3. Probably almost every invention that is built today has been done before. Just in a smaller less functional design. Like Motion control gaming has been done before, touch screen has been done before, a table use for entertainment such as watching videos has been done before. Then Apple will come up with something better and then it will keep on going and going till we end up with hologram entertainment and video games were you put on goggles and play the game as if you are mario with no controls

  4. did you see when he moved the puzzle pieces around how slow it was. They better fix that before trying to sell it! It was lagging behind!

  5. 1:15 it’s slow! fix that!

  6. looks like giant iphone

  7. ummmm the ipod touch/iphone…… exact same thing just 100 times smaller

  8. no… this has a whole bunch more features than the iphone… one of its feature is able to connect device without wire… transfer music without using wire… does mac have that? no.. plus can the iphone does the puzzle thing? …. no. seriously I bet in 3 or 4 years i bet apple ganna come up with the same exact thing but smaller. touch is not first invented by apple. i have an itouch and iphone and i really like it. but how the hell can u compare it with Milan

  9. yes there are ways to bluetooth transfer things on itouch or iphone, and yes, video puzzles? Theres an app for that….. suck it

  10. They used one on UK X factor this year

  11. per tutti voi appassionati di calcio che ricercate un’opportunità per essere visti o che volete vedere dei futuri professionistiè online un nuovo sito KICKO……

  12. no its not the same on an iphone u can use maximum of 2 fingers but on this there is no limit u can even use 10 fingers at a time and a lot more features are der wich philawockeez told u

  13. dude, you can track almost unlimited points on the iphone, check you’re facts dickhead and all the things that philawockeez pointed out CAN be done on the iphone, do you have one? i think not so just be quiet and crawl back to your virus infected operating system, bet you this thing will also have the BSOD

  14. except this is an actual computer, while the iphone is a toy

  15. (huh)blue(huh)(huh)screen(huh)(huh)(huh)of(huh)death(huh)(huh)(huh)(huh) sorry think im getting a virus

plus its heaps fucking bigger… that counts for a lot.

  19. they should probably use these in schools… that way instead of using and wasting paper and ink you could just type notes and do… educational stuff lol. schools should start learning how to integrate technology with education. … school took my phone away :(

  20. Considering this is very advanced technology built on something that is now two years out of date., a more modern table will most likley have more cores than this one from 2 years ago, not to mention faster ram and a better SDD drive

  21. @dabeshu The iPhone is a Phone, clues in the name.

It’s also lot’s of other things, toy included.

It’s good to have different devices, iPhone or Pre for mobile use, laptop for working on the move, 32″ home PC for heavy use and stuff like Surface for hotel lobbies, restaurants and bars, shops and a coffee table replacement (TV guide without blocking the screen).

I have an iPhone but I’m a PC, my home PC with Bravia, my Vaio and my iPhone complement each other.

  22. @tecnoali I can use 5 fingers on my iPhone in the “fluid” app.

This can have something like 70 fingers on it without lagging.
Lot’s of people around it sharing photos and videos.

  23. @Seech1050 I have an iPhone so I know what you’re talking about but you’re just speaking BS about windows.
Macs don’t BSoD, they just freeze and don’t tell you what went wrong.
My Windows system works fine because I built it myself, I didn’t buy crap from Dell or some other company that fills the inside with cheap crap and doesn’t integrate Windows very well.

  24. @G1NZOU

Huh. Thank you for informing me.

  25. @dabeshu I used to think the iPhone was a Toy, I only bought one last week and love it although I’ll never buy an iMac.

I still liek other phones but the iPhone just does a wide range of things really well, plus most other touchscreen phones I’ve tried have crap touch response.
